Before I call in to support and open a ticket, I would like to eliminate any simple causes.
We have just purchased a new HP MSL4048 tape library with 2 6250 SAS LTO-6 tape drives. Along with the library, we purchased a HP DL360 Gen8 to act as the media server. The tape array is connected to the media server via a HP H221 SAS card and the recommended SAS spider cable.
I have applied all HP SPP firmware updates from the 9/14 SPP, as well as the latest tape drive firmware (352W)
The server is also running SEP 12.1.5, but in tests I have also tried with SEP turned off.
Backups of the media server C: drive (about 25GB) start off at about 900MB/min and taper off significantly down to <200MB/min for a job average of about 450MB/min. Backup of another 2012 test server also gives the same throughput.
This is WAY below our older BE 2010 media server with LTO2 and LTO4. It easily reaches 1700MB/min for network backups.
Verify operations run at over 10,000MB/min. I don't expect that for writes, but I was hoping for something in the 4800 range.
I have been very careful to leave everything as default as possible, but I am at a total loss why write speed is so bad. Since this is a 2012 server, I don't believe I have the option to use Symatec Tape drivers, and I don't know if that would help anyway.
What am I missing?
